Back to the Northern Ionian

We bounced backwards and forwards between Nydri, Vliho,  Levkas for a few days before heading to Palairos - not far away on the mainland. Encountering issues with wire strops in the anchorage - discovered on diving on the anchor, we moved along the big bay towards the sailing school and had a quiet night. Weather looked threatening the next day and we debated staying, but being unsure of the holding decided to return to Vliho. That proved to be a good decision as thunder and lightning developed. Not to a great extent, but we were pleased to be safe and have drinks with Babis and Wendy on Carpe Diem, joined by Bruce and Sue, Grant and Natsha - fellow Kiwi sailors. The most we had seen all season.

Heading North, we picked up a mooring for the night at a beach bar on the South East side of the Levkas Canal. Two days later, we transited the Canal again arriving back in Preveza, then exploring the Gulf of Amvrakikas - an inland sea. We anchored in a delightful anchorage near Vonitsa and next day walked to town to visit the Castle. One of the few Castles we visited this year. In previous years, we had been "Castled Out" by the time we got to Vonitsa.

Back to Preveza to check out and stock up with groceries, Port Police advised of impending bad weather and queried our decision to leave. We decided to stay one more day, so no check in/checkout. First thing next morning we checked out and sat out the bad weather. Early next morning making a start for Mourtos on the mainland. It was a good day sailing, with variable wind on the beam, dying as we went North.  The anchorages were full, and we ended up a bit North at Plataria. A sleepy little town where I had left Checkmate in the water for 6 months during my navigation. It is only 23 miles from Corfu town.
