On to Preveza For The Survey

A motor sail from Antipaxos to Preveza. It was a pleasure to be back in Turtle Bay Preveza albeit for only two nights. Caught up with "Adventurous" a Prout with a bowsprit. The owners - Australians David and Jaynee tolerated my interruption and we had a long chat about their long cruising history to the point where they got engaged the previous evening.

I used the spare day to wander around Preveza visiting old haunts and stocking up on groceries.

Lift out and Survey at Cleopatra marina

The marina is very professionally run and everything was on time and went well. I met Xavier, the prospective purchaser briefly as he was off on an assignment in Athens. Something to do with  a large motor yacht.  He is an adventurer and tour guide. I had the use of s motor scooter, so filled containers with outboard fuel and diesel from a nearby Shell station.

I also transited the tunnel to Preveza Town.  It is an extensive toll tunnel under the sea linking Aktio with Preveza. Cost .70E for a scooter.

Rolfe the surveyor arrived on Sunday and the survey started early in the morning and proceeded almost entirely for the next 12 hours. A break during the heat of the day. And into the next morning for 2 hours.

Lift in was supposed to be at 8am, but was delayed till 9.30.  I was a bit stressed at the delay as I was due back in Corfu in 2 days to pick up Grandchildren. (35 is not a child)

I made it back to Plataria for the night, and Corfu  the next day.

Too Much Excitement For One Day

 Emerald Bay

Is a favourite anchorage on the Northern side of AntiPaxoi (Antipaxos) since my work with Sailing Holidays last Century

It was a pleasure to return and find the Bay moderately empty. That did not last. A few boats left, then from 11am to 3pm tripper boats arrived - stayed for an hour - then left.

Laura and Anika swam over from their hired runabout. Two Kiwis working remotely in different parts of the world.  An Archaeologist and a Civil Engineer. Neither with boating experience had been told how to start the engine, forward, reverse, throw the anchor over and if there are any problems, we will find you via gps tracker. They anchored in the middle of the bay just ahead of me and of course their anchor dragged in to mine. The tripper boats did a fantastic job maneuvering between us to get in and  out of the bay.  When it came time to leave, they realised they were stuck and Anika swam over to lket me know. In 4metres of water it was no trouble to free them. They stayed a while longer before leaving.

A New Zealand Catamaran - Tiki Tour was in the bay and I was invited to a BBQ ashore in the evening. Dave and Diane have been sailing for 8 years with their children Kiera and Finn. It was a pleasure to meet them and hear their stories.

I spent a morning snorkeling in the bay - clarity of the water is amazing. I scored two pair of sunglasses.

The next day - Turnaround day for charter boats saw a few more charter boats arrive. Then the Tripper Boats came in enmass. Stayed for an hour then left, to be replaced by more Tripper boats. All of the boats in these photos were beside me at some stage during the day.  Only one went over my anchor. I dived, drew a diagram and gave it to the skipper. All very professional. I lowered his large fenders to suit Moondance and chatted to some of the people on the boat. No prizes for guessing which boat it was from the photos.  The skipper gave me a litre of Grappa and suggested I drink it slowly.

I had to  growl at a few people who thought my rope tying me to a rock had been put there for them to play with. The thought of drifting into the superyacht on one side of me at that stage was not pleasant.

When they left, two superyachts took their place.  Phew - for a while until a charter yacht with 3 Spaniards aboard tried to squeeze between me and a superyacht - by going over my anchor. It was not going to happen. Sign language and a bit of looking big prevailed and they eventually moved on - after anchoring many other people emerged from the yacht. It is amazing how many people fit on charter yachts.

Tomorrow is another day, but one day more here is would be too much excitement for me. I will now contemplate what menu the superyachts have. Maybe they will offer me leftovers?

No leftovers. I moved to a free anchor place in bay and stayed to watch todays show - and clean to yacht. I thought it a much better place than Preveza, my next destination.

All these boats anchored right next to me during the day

Lia wanted to jump off Moondance for her holiday photos

I was anchored between these two for the night

Next days Bay - 200metres from where I was last night

and free anchored away from the tripper boats

The next Bay - Scene of the BBQ ashore with Dave and Diane
There is always one. An American that anchored too close
Suspicioua activity.  A Police Boat arrived and took a large object off a rental boat
Many small craft were involved. Lots of phone calls They were there for a long time.
I saw, heard, and said nothing

Interesting Meet Ups in Exotic Places A Plethora of Kiwis

Today (31 May - my 75th birthday) I visited Moon Shadow. A beautiful Catamaran owned by Bill and Paula from Takapuna. We were both anchored in Kommeno outside Gouvia Marina in Corfu Greece.

Paula is the daughter of Terry Cookson and sister of Mick. The family who designed and built Checkmate. It was an honour to meet Bill and Paula and convey to the family how much Checkmate had been a part of my life and love of cruising. Some of the best years of my life.  They had seen my post in Noonsite on my circumnigaton and passed it on to the family.

Naturally the conversation also covered other cruising topics and was most enjoyable. But then meeting other people is always interesting and almost always fun. (Provided they are anchored a reasonable distance away)

Neal and Lesley from Tauranga were on Euphoria - a catamaran with a nespresso coffee making machine. I was spoilt with coffee and pancakes. Again we met in Kommeno. I left later in the afternoon to be closer to the resaurants bars and nightclubs of Corfu for my birthday and anchored close to Corfu town near the Yacht Yard which was more sheltered than Kommeno. Surprisingly many yachts are now using this anchorage. I was surprised to see Euphoria had followed me to the anchorage. There to pick up guests (their daughter) the next day.

My birthday In Corfu was a quiet celebration with drinks, (well a drink) then dinner at a the "Corner" restaurant in the market area.

Next day it was off to Plataria - on my way South to Preveza. Plataria is a quiet town onthe mainland. A good and safe anchorage. I filled the tanks with water.

Next  day was a motors ail to Emerald Bay. A favourite stop for tripper boats and flotilla charters. I tied the stern to a rock as the tripper boats left.

I was soon joined by "Tiki Tour" with Dave, Diane and two children Kiera and Finn. They have been sailing for many years and had great stories of sailing and travelling adventures including property development in London. Both young with hue life experience. We shared a BBQ on shore - a weber.

Laura and Anika swam over and introduced themselves. Both travelling the world and working remotely as an archaeologist and Civil Engineer. They hired a small runabout with a big engine - no instruction and no experience. They drifted and caught my anchor chain. First dive of the season I had their anchor free.  Nice to know I can still do it
